This week I received two phone calls from the Department of Social Security which ended up in my voicemail.  It was a recorded message and it was the same each time.  Below is the message I received:

Thank you.  This call is from the Department of Social Security Administration.  The reason you have received our phone call is to inform you that we have suspended your social security number because we found some suspicious activity.  So if you want to know about this case, just press one, thank you.

Even though I immediately suspected a scam, I researched it and found on the Federal Trade Commission Consumer Information website that it is indeed a scam that people should look out for.

From everything I’ve ever read about not falling prey to scams, the golden rule is, NEVER give out personal information over the phone! Of course there are many types of scams out there and some are very sophisticated and easily fool people.  So don’t feel ashamed if you have ever fallen for a  scam because these con artists know just how to trick people and they keep changing how they do it.
