Sentencing for Deposit Man Who Shot NYS Trooper

A Deposit man convicted of shooting and wounding a New York State Trooper last June is to spend decades behind bars.

45-year-old Scott Mawhiney was convicted in November of attempted murder of a police officer as well as aggravated assault against a police officer, weapon possession and harassment.  The felony conviction of attempted murder of a police officer alone carries a possible sentence of 20 years to life in New York State prison.

The sentencing in Broome County Court had been scheduled for 10 a.m. February 4 where Mawhiney was sentenced to 30 years to life in prison.

New York State Trooper Ryan Thorp was wounded in the arm on June 23^rd after responding to a report of a dispute at 10 Sunrise Terrace in the Village of Deposit.

Testimony during the November trial outlined how Mawhiney was upset when he got home from work early, took a prescribed anti-anxiety medication and drank roughly 3 white Russians as he and his fiancée got into a dispute and she called authorities.

Mawhiney claimed he remembered little of the incident.

Trooper Thorp suffered severe injuries to his arm and underwent several surgeries following the shooting.

District Attorney Michael Korchak held a news conference following the sentencing where, flanked by several members of the local law enforcement community, he called the lengthy prison term justified.
