New York State Police Are Looking For Drunk Drivers This Holiday Weekend

It’s a holiday weekend and New York State police are out and about making sure that the highways of New York are safe.

Speed Awareness Week was from July 31 to August 8, and New York State Police issued more than 20,000 speeding tickets in that week alone. In addition to speeding violations, officers issued over 37,700 tickets for other traffic and vehicle violations.

Mark J. F. Schroeder is the DMV Commissioner and he said, “New York has zero tolerance for reckless driving behaviors, such as speeding, that needlessly put all those sharing the road at risk. As the enforcement campaign shows, dangerous drivers will be caught and held accountable. I thank all law-enforcement officers for the hard work ensuring safety on our state roads.”

If you are about to hit the road for the holiday weekend, don’t think that law enforcement is not slacking up. Law-enforcement officials say that they will be out on the highways to enforce speed limits and other traffic laws to ensure safety during the holiday weekend.

Historically, the Labor Day weekend is a prime time for fatal crashes. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says that most fatal traffic accidents occur between June and October. Officials say that during the 2020 Labor Day weekend, fatal crashes increased 36% in comparison to the 2019 holiday weekend. That is definitely a move in the wrong direction.

We are all excited to get one last fun weekend in before the summer is over, but we must remain diligent. Go out, have fun, be safe, wear your mask, and don’t drink and drive.
