My family was very into playing games as an amusement when I was a kid.  We had a huge cabinet filled with games of every kind but there were a few that were my favorites and were taken out regularly:

KerPlunk (pictured above): This game requires a steady hand, a bit of strategic stick removal, and of course luck so you don't let more marbles fall than your opponent.

Monopoly: My brother and I would literally play this game for days, much to the chagrin of my mother who got sick of seeing it littering the living room.

Mouse Trap: This game was fun to play because it involved constructing the trap that hopefully, the opponent's mouse get trapped under.  The problem with this game was that half the time, you'd turn the crank and somewhere along the trap's chain of events, something wouldn't work.  It was fun any away because it was so visual.

Operation: This game features a creepy looking naked guy with holes in his body where parts of his body are placed.  Your job is to remove them (ewww!) without touching the tweezers to the metal sides.  Not as easy as it looks!  The great thing about this game is that it's just weird but it does provide a strange fascination in the world of medicine. I found an old TV commercial advertising "Operation".  You've love this!

Cards:  who can say enough about a simple deck of cards which provided me and my family with endless hours of fun, playing quite a variety of games.  Plus, there were some games like "War" and "Solitaire" that I could play on my own.  You've gotta love it!
