Middle school students will meet on the SUNY Delhi campus February 4 beginning at 10 a.m. in Evenden Tower to compete in MATHCOUNTS®, a nationwide math enrichment, coaching and competition program. Locally, this program is made possible through the support of SUNY Delhi with leadership of middle school math teachers and the Broome Chapter of the National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE).

MATHCOUNTS promotes math achievement with all the challenge of a sporting event. Student Mathletes® train individually and in teams. They have the opportunity to compete in local, state and national competitions.

In March, local winners will travel to the state competition at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy. The top four Mathletes from the state competition will receive an all-expense paid trip to Orlando, Fla. for the 2017 Raytheon MATHCOUNTS National Competition. National winners receive scholarships with their trophies.

Some 90 Mathletes from Boynton, Candor, Dewitt, Jennie F. Snapp, Margaretville, Seton Catholic Central, Tioga, Vestal, and Windsor Middle Schools are currently registered for the local competition.

Nationally, more than 250,000 students utilize MATHCOUNTS materials and over 5,500 schools participate annually. More than six million students have participated since the program began in 1983.

The National Sponsors of MATHCOUNTS are Raytheon Company, Northrop Grumman Foundation, U.S. Department of Defense, National Society of Professional Engineers, CNA Foundation, Phillips 66, Texas Instruments Incorporated, 3Mgives, Art of Problem Solving, NextThought and National Council of Teachers of Mathematics.

MATHCOUNTS was founded by the National Society of Professional Engineers, National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, and CNA Foundation.

The public is encouraged to visit SUNY Delhi to watch the competition. For more details about MATHCOUNTS, please visit mathcounts.org, or contact Walter Bray at SUNY Delhi, braywh@delhi.edu.
