Afton, New York Racetrack Dreams Realized
Brandon Clapperton is a man with a plan. A go-kart enthusiast from a young age, he has always had his hands in local racing in some capacity. After sharing two tracks with others, Clapperton opened the Dreamfield Speedway in Afton, NY on July 20th.
In an interview, Clapperton said: "I had two other kart tracks, but they were shared facilities, so I couldn’t do everything I wanted to do, so I approached the Afton fair board last September about the possibility of building a temporary track there for a race in the fall. Before I got the written proposal in, there was a falling out with the promotional team from the stock car track and the fair board, and Saturday nights became available, so I put in a proposal for a permanent track instead."
It took Clapperton six months to get approval from the board, and the dirt track was built in a total of 83 days ahead of the July opening coinciding with the county fair.
2024's season has seen a handful of races spanning July 20, August 17, September 20- 21, and October 11-12. 2025's schedule will be greatly expanded. "As of right now, the plans for next year include about a dozen shows on Saturday nights from April through October." Clapperton said.
Clapperton added that the race on October 12th is a 212 lap Xtreme Budget Predator race called “The 212”. This is the 5th year for the race. It was held at Champion Speedway in Owego in 2020, then Action Park East Speedway in Greene from 2021-2023.
Safety is top of mind with everything that happens at the new racetrack, and is reflected in the rules that are posted. Helmets, gloves, jackets, and neck brace required for all classes according to the track's social media. For more information, visit their page here.
