Growing up in the 80s and 90s our parents diligently checked our Halloween candy for foreign objects due to hype and rumor from the media and other sources. Such objects included pins, razors, needles, and other sharps.

Just a month ago, I wrote an off the cuff story about silly Halloween myths and legends. At the top of the list was a section entitled "The Razor Blade in the Apple". Never in my wildest dreams did I think I'd be reporting on an alleged incident right here in my backyard.

According to snopes.com, on the topic of razor blades in Halloween food: "As Best and Horiuchi (authors of the Razor Blade) note, more than 75 percent of reported cases involved no injury, and detailed followups in 1972 and 1982 concluded that virtually all the reports were hoaxes concocted by the children or parents."

New York State Troopers out of Sidney, New York issued a warning on Saturday, claiming that razor blades had been found locally in Halloween candy. The warning says: "NYSP Sidney Troopers are investigating reports of tampered Halloween candy containing razor blades. The affected candy was reportedly collected in the village of Bainbridge, Chenango County on Halloween night."

The comments on the NYSP Facebook saw mixed reactions. One commenter noted that she's in her 50s and has been warned of this her whole life, but had never seen it actually happen. Other people cried hoax and pointed to inconsistencies in the story and pictures. Others simply noted their disdain with the possible incident.

If you have any information on this incident, the State Police in Sidney can be contacted at (607)561-7400.
