Rabid Racoon in Middlefield

The Otsego county department of health has found another rabid raccoon. This one was found in the town of Middlefield. The report says the animal attacked a dog, then a man was bitten by the raccoon when he tried to rescue the dog. The health department cautions people to stay away from wild animals or stray domestic pets. This is the fourth animal found to be rabid this year. The number to call to report a suspected rabid animal is 547-4230.

Elks lodge helps with pool costs

Repairs to the Kurt Beyer pool on Cortland street will get underway this spring, thanks to the city of Norwich and private organizations, but no decision has been made on whether the city will have to charge a fee for its use. The Norwich Elks Lodge will also be raising money to help with the expense of pool maintenance. The pool is expected to open around july 4th.

Presidential Primary Day Today

Today is Presidential Primary Day, but only for republicans. Voters can go to the polls today to select one of three candidates still on the ballot. Apparent front runner Mitt Romney of Massachusetts is on the ballot, along with Newt Gingrich and Ron Paul. There have not been many visits from the g-o-p candidates. Ron Paul made an appearance at Cornell University in Ithaca last week. Former New York City mayor Rudy Guiliani has formally endorsed Mitt Romney in an announcement yesterday. Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Delaware, and Rhode Island all have primaries today in what is considered the end of Presidental Primary season.

Magee Has a New District

Democratic Assemblyman Bill Magee has never lost an election in his 20 years in office. Magee who now represents the 111th Assembly District will be vying for the seat in the newly formed 121st Assembly District.. The new district has only minor changes in the territory he represents currently, but he will be challenged for that seat by 37 year old Republican Levi Spears, a former Air Force Captain with three children and a graduate of Syracuse University. Spires says he is up to the challenge to unseat 72 year old Magee.

In a meet at Cherry Valley Springfield, both Cherry Valley Springfield boys and girls teams ran to first place to defeat Davenport/South Kortright.
