I admit I have never had a desire to grow vegetables or any other edibles.  I grew up in a family where my brother, sister and I worked seemingly endlessly in the HUGE family garden.  We sowed seeds, we mulched, we weeded and we picked rocks out of the soil, grumbling all the while.  It was hard work and I just knew I never wanted to do it again.

I don't know what changed for me because this year I decided that it was about time I grew some of my own veggies.  I do love to eat fresh vegetables and I guess the idea of having fresh produce from my own garden appealed to me.  I will certainly know exactly what I'm getting.  No pesticides or who knows what in the food I'm eating.

There's only one problem: I have no real idea what I'm doing, other than common sense.  I've been gardening for years, but it's all flowers and shrubs.  That's quite  a different thing altogether.

Another reason why I haven't had a vegetable garden until now is because I have deer and plenty of other wildlife that frequent my yard.  A garden would be a free buffet for them all.  To address that, I bought a large container garden with a screen covering it to keep out critters.

So, it would seem I have all the bases covered, now I just have to hope I get the spacing and watering right.  To be continued...
