I'll start this off with assuring you, dear reader, that there are absolutely zero spoilers here for the season finale of FX/Hulu's Reservation Dogs, so read on with confidence.

There are so many things streaming these days that are begging for our eyes, it's hard to pick and choose just what to watch. Reservation Dogs came on the scene in 2021 and arrived to critical acclaim across the board. I've been watching the show since it debuted, and though the show has ended, and the timing feels perfect, I'm selfishly not quite ready to let it go. It's really that good. My dear, old friend Brad lives in Ada, Oklahoma and works within indigenous media and production. According to him, the show is the most authentic look into reservation life, down to the slang that is used. He goes on to note that this kind of storytelling is so important for the rest of America to watch and understand.

Your Medicine is Strong!

Created by modern television luminary Taika Waititi who co-writes and executive produces, and Oklahoma native Sterlin Harjo, who executive produces, directs, and co-writes. The show is groundbreaking as it is an indigenous comedy series set and filmed on location in Oklahoma. It's an authentic look into the life on a reservation through the eyes of four teenagers who begin the series facing a tragic loss that will change them forever. Over the course of the series, the show follows Bear, Elora Danan (yes, named for the Willow character), Cheese, and Willie Jack across the reservation and even half of the country on their quest for growth and closure.

Greasy Greasy Fry Bread

One of the best parts of the show aside from the indigenous storytelling is the character development. Over the course of three seasons, and now to the finale, the characters feel like old friends we visit with when the show runs. There are too many to list, but for me, Cheese and Uncle Brownie top the list. Cheese because of his chilled out personality and killer t-shirt collection, and Uncle Brownie for his wise, old indigenous stoner ways.

Local Indigenous Culture

If Reservation Dogs has influenced you, and you'd like to learn more about indigenous culture, you're in luck! The Iroquois Museum located in Howe's Cave, NY is just a short drive and according to their website is "an educational institution dedicated to fostering understanding of Iroquois culture using Iroquois art as a window to that culture". The museum building itself is designed to resemble Great Iroquois Longhouses, and and along with its permanent exhibits, hosts an array of programs and events.
