More and more people are enjoying the outdoors and all the fun activities that go along with it during the coronavirus pandemic and along with that, the Emergency Department of UHS Delaware Valley Hospital in Walton is just reminding us all to remember to wear a helmet when riding a bicycle, skateboard, scooter, ATV or motorcycle.

Accidents involving the use of those can cause very severe head injuries that can be prevented or lessened by wearing a helmet. Some statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) can put wearing a helmet into perspective. According to NYTSA, When fitted properly, bike helmets can reduce head injuries by 85% and traumatic brain injuries by 88%. Because of their proven effectiveness, NYS encourages people of all ages to wear a helmet when they ride. The NHTSA has some excellent information about wearing helmets including information about how to properly fit a helmet on a child (see video below). You can visit their website at www.nhtsa.gov.
