SUNY Oneonta has postponed construction of a townhouse facility that originally had been scheduled to open to students in 2014. The complex, projected to house nearly 200 students, was planned in response to the college's 2010 New Student Housing Program study, which concluded that the campus could support approximately 600 additional beds.

SUNY Oneonta president Nancy Kleniewski, in a campus-wide announcement on Thursday, said that the likelihood of a private company entering the college student housing market in Oneonta led to the choice to defer the townhouses.

The college also began communicating the decision Thursday morning to neighbors who had expressed an interest in staying abreast of progress on the townhouses. Emails were sent to many residents who had participated in open forums held by the college last year to discuss the project.
