At least one out of every three women worldwide has been beaten, forced into sex or otherwise abused in her lifetime by a partner, relative, friend, stranger, employer and/or colleague.

Of these crimes, less than 50% are reported to the police. It is time to make a change.

The violence intervention program at Opportunities for Otsego in conjunction with Hartwick College and SUNY Oneonta as well as Family Planning of South Central New York will be holding its annual “Take Back the Night March” at 6:30 p.m. Thursday in Oneonta.

Educator of the violence intervention program, April Conant, talks about Thursday’s event.

"It starts at SUNY Oneonta on the Milne Library steps where there will be speeches, singers from the Hooked on Tonic a capella group," Conant said. "The event will then proceed over to Hartwick, then we continue to the Huntington Library Park where there will be bagpipers."

The evening will conclude with a candlelight vigil to honor the victims of violence.
