Springbrook will hold tryouts for the Scorpions Special Olympics Basketball teams and Skills Competitors on Tuesday, January 27 and Wednesday, January 28 from 6-8pm.

Springbrook, the area’s leading provider of innovative supports and services for people of all ages with developmental disabilities, will hold tryouts for the Scorpions Special Olympics Basketball teams and Skills Competitors on Tuesday, January 27 and Wednesday, January 28 from 6-8pm. Tryouts will be held in The School at Springbrook gymnasium located at 105 Campus Drive, Oneonta, NY 13820.

Interested athletes do not need to receive services from Springbrook to be part of the Scorpions basketball team. This opportunity is available to any athletes eight years of age and older who have been identified by an agency or medical professional as having an intellectual disability; or have a cognitive delay as determined by standardized measures; or have significant learning or vocational problems due to cognitive delays which require or have required specially-designed instruction.

Basketball is one of the top sports at Special Olympics. Any individual interested in the sport, whether a young player just learning to handle the ball or an experienced player looking to improve strategies and skills, is encouraged to attend the tryouts. It will be an opportunity to learn more about the Springbrook Scorpions as well as learn from Springbrook’s Special Olympics-certified and trained coaches.

Springbrook has sponsored a Special Olympics basketball team for over 15 years, winning all levels of recognition from the Special Olympics of New York State including Bronze, Silver, and Gold medals at the New York State Championships as well as countless Skill Competitor’s individual accomplishments and regional championships. In the past two years the Special Olympics offerings sponsored by Springbrook for the Central New York region have grown to include Soccer and Track & Field. The Track & Field season will run concurrently with the Basketball season.

The tryouts are free and there is no charge to join a team. Those athletes chosen for one of the teams will be provided with warm-up attire and a uniform. Interested athletes should come to the tryouts prepared with a water bottle, sneakers, and appropriate athletic attire.
