Oneonta’s Juneteenth Celebration is This Saturday

"Juneteenth" is a holiday which celebrates the final complete freedom for the Southern enslaved people in the Confederate South.  Word of emancipation finally reached Galveston, Texas on June 19, 1865, which is why this celebration is acknowledged on that date across the United States.

The City of Oneonta will join hundreds of communities nationwide in celebrating this day on Saturday, June 19, 2021 beginning at 3:00. in the city's Neahwa Park.  The day will be one that is filled with many talented entertainers as well as a whole host of family-friendly events.  Join the fun with a community BBQ starting at 3pm until 5pm.

The popular local entertainer DJ Wooden will be on hand with music.  There will be something for everyone. Child friendly activities including face painting, bubbles, and story time with time to browse through and enter the raffle baskets and pick up this years T-Shirt!  Event goers will enjoy pieces from local Black artist Kirchelle Alton and Madeleigh Place with Bertram Knight as our featured artist.

Dance fans will like the special opportunity to learn and perform a step from two Step Afrika teachers, Ayda Tuku &Elijah Hunter.  Starting the main event at 5pm is Oneonta Mayor Gary Herzig followed by an introduction to Juneteenth from Jonathan Brown.

Hear the joyous voice of Oneonta local, Ajare Malcolm.  Anthony Eardley will recite his personal poetry following a special performance from the brothers of Psi Beta Sigma- Naji Lawerance, Garon Senior, Tyler Kelly and Andrew Perez.

Comedian Taury Seward will keep the laughs coming, and rapper and spoken word extraordinaire Clotree will end the main event with her person writings.
