Members and civilian employees of the New York State Police celebrated Women's History Month Tuesday with the theme "Celebrating Women of Character, Courage and Commitment."

The keynote speaker was Deputy Superintendent Field Commander Patricia M. Groeber. Groeber is the third in command of the state police and the first female to hold the position.

The New York State Police first hired four female troopers in 1974. Today more than 900 women are troopers or state police employees.
