The news story about the Carnival Cruise ship Triumph debacle where over 4000 people were adrift with minimal power, food and water since Sunday jogged my memory of my worst vacation ever.  I can't say it compares with what those poor people on the cruise ship are going through right now as they are being slowly towed back to land, but I think each of us has at least one vacation nightmare story so here's mine.

It was 1994 when my fiance and I decided to take a fun camping trip to Assateague Island in Maryland.  It's the very island where the wild ponies roam and promised to be a fun camping adventure.  Well, I'm sure it could have been great if a horrible storm system hadn't moved in the morning after we arrived.  We spent two days inside a very small, wet tent surviving solely on dry bagels, Crunch 'N Munch, and beer.

During the night on the second night, keep in mind the storm never stopped and only increased in intensity, our tent caved in on us.  We threw all of our sopping wet belongings in the car, in the pouring rain, and headed to the nearest hotel (wherever that might be).  Fortunately we were very close to Ocean City, Maryland and just headed in that direction, figuring we would come across a hotel without a problem.  We checked into a hotel at three in the morning, exhausted, saturated, and dirty.  I immediately jumped into the shower and to my horror found a giant, fat with my blood tick stuck to my arm.  My knee jerk reaction was to pull it off right away.

It's safe to assume that we stayed in that hotel for the remainder of our vacation and tried to make the most out of the continued rainy weather in Ocean City. At least it was better than the tent!

By the way, a few weeks after that vacation, I ended up with flu-like symptoms and had to get tested for Lymes Disease.  Fortunately, the test turned out negative.
