I went to the Delaware County Fair yesterday with my family and had quite a time!  Not being one to ride on more than two or three rides because of motion sickness, the fair for me is more about animals, exhibits, entertainment, and of course...FOOD!  Where else can you get a deep fried Reese's Peanut Butter Cup?  Never mind the calories.  That is something that goes right out the window the minute you enter the fair gates.

What kind of rides can I handle?  Get ready to laugh...things that don't spin.  That leaves out almost everything but bumper cars and a giant slide which I could barely get down because I kept sticking to it on the way down.

So of course after my kids had had enough of the rides, my daughter's eye caught sight of a ping-pong ball toss game booth giving away goldfish and hermit crabs.  Uh oh!  I have "schooled" my kids over the years about the game booths and that it's hard to win.  When you do win, you end up paying four times over for the prize you just won. I always want my kids to know what they're getting into, but

of course, she HAD TO HAVE a hermit crab and she wanted to spend her money on the game so she did.  The object is to get any one of your ping pong balls into a glass jar.  The glass jar you get your ball into determines the prize.  She scored two (not the hermit crab one) and was so happy!  $20 later, we walked away from the game booth with a hermit crab in a cute box with everything we would need to take care of him and an ecstatic teenager (not an easy achievement!).  But wait, there's more...when we got home, the research on hermit crabs began and much to our dismay, contrary to the words of the man at the game booth who assured us that hermit crabs are very easy to care for, we discovered quite the contrary.  They actually need a special warm, humid climate, toys to not get bored, and at least two more hermit crabs friends, otherwise they get depressed and die!  Good grief!  Talk about being taken advantage of.  I have to say that my daughter is so happy with her new hermit crabs and that's worth it to me as long as we can keep them alive.  Let's just hope we don't end up killing those critters accidentally!

So feel free to enjoy the Delaware County Fair and all it has to offer but you may want to steer the kids away from the hermit crabs and go for the goldfish.  That is one pet that is very easy to take care of and hard to kill.

The Fair runs through August 22nd.  For more information go to DelawareCountyFair.org.
