Yesterday, my husband and I took the kids to the beach at Gilbert Lake State Park in Laurens, NY to enjoy some fun in the sun.  Since it was rare day in August that was actually warm enough to consider swimming, there were many people there enjoying nature's spoils.

One thing that was like an ant hill, constantly buzzing with excited children of all ages, was the big sand hill on the beach.  It was my first trip to Gilbert Lake this season so this was new attraction for me, to observe this giant pile of sand and all the action surrounding it.  It was by far, the busiest spot at the beach.  Kids were enjoying all sorts of ways to utilize the sand pile, but by far, the burying of siblings, friends, and random strangers was the popular activity on that sand hill.  My son decided after swimming for a short while (the water was a bit cold) that he wanted to be buried in the sand on that hill.  After he busted out of it (that's the best part), kids started lining up, chiming "Now me! Now me!"  They didn't care that I was a stranger.  All they knew was that they saw me burying my son and they wanted in on the action.

What is it about being buried in the sand that is so enjoyable?  I couldn't say.  Maybe it's just cool to see your body disappear under the sand or the feeling of the cool sand covering your body?  Or maybe it's the excitement of busting out of the sand like some kind of super hero?  It's just plain fun for all and I recommend checking it out at Gilbert Lake before the Summer is gone.
