Hit And Run Driver Kills Laurens Bicyclist
A man responsible for a fatal hit-and-run accident has been taken into custody by New York State Police. According to state troopers, 22-year-old Michael Goodspeed of Mount Vision, on July 2, was State Route 205 near the intersection of Timer Road when he hit a man on a bicycle, 37-year-old Michael Vargas of Laurens at 9:30 pm. Instead of stopping and calling for help, Goodspeed left the scene and now faces charges. Vargas was pronounced dead at the scene.
On July 3, following an investigation, Goodspeed was arrested by police and charged with Vehicular Manslaughter in the second degree and Leaving the Scene of a Fatal Motor Collision, both are felonies. It's not known if Goodspeed was under the influence of drugs or alcohol or if he is currently being held pending a court date or was released on bail, out on his own recognizance.
