Invasive Beetle May Be In NY Pools [PIC]
If you are a pool owner in New York state, the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) wants you to keep your eyes open for an invasive beetle that could ruin the environment. Here are the details. With summer in full swing, pool owners in New York state are enjoying a hot season. While you are enjoying swimming, keep your eyes open for this invasive species of beetle that could harm trees and the environment.
According to the New York State DEC website, the Asian Longhorned Beetle is making a resurgence in New York state and could appear in your swimming pool this summer.
They tend to be most active in trees and then come outside their host trees in August. New York state pool owners are urged to be part of the DEC's annual Asian Longhorned Beetle Swimming Pool Survey. This will help locate infestations of this beetle before they cause major damage to the state's trees.
All that is required is that pool owners check filters for the insects that look like the Asian Longhorned Beetles and then email their pictures to
DEC is asking swimming pool owners to periodically check pool filters for insects that resemble ALB and report suspects either by emailing photos to foresthealth@dec.ny.gov. If you don't have a pool, you can check the trees in your yard for beetle sightings.
