Like last year, I am once again dismayed to see the announcement listed on the Oneonta Police Department's Facebook page, from the Oneonta City Clerk's Office regarding door-to-door solicitations:

"The Citizen's Campaign has been given permission to canvas the City of Oneonta from May 27 - June 20, 2014 between the hours of 4 and 9pm (Monday through Friday) and Saturday and Sunday from 11am to 1pm. If you have any *criminal* concerns, contact the Police Department at 432-1111. If you have concerns over the canvassing, the City Clerk's office can be reached at 432-6450."

Here's how I feel about this...The Citizen's Campaign aside, unless it's a neighborhood kid trying to sell something as a fundraising effort for school or another extracurricular activity, I don't like solicitors coming to my house.  I find it invasive.  If I want to buy something or get more information about something, I go to the source.  I don't want to be bothered at my house.

I do want to make it clear that The Citizen's Campaign isn't trying to sell a product.  Their mission is to provide US citizens with tools and training for effecting political change in their community. They are a non-profit organization based out of New Jersey.  I think the group coming to Oneonta will be doing environmental advocacy, based on my past experiences with this organization.
