Bugs get into homes on occasion. Bugs are important to the environment and serve many purposes, but when a stray one is crawling across the living room floor, it makes me squirm.

I live in a wooded area and bugs make their way into my home from time to time. I've had the usual infiltrators, spiders and ants, but the pill bug was new.

This small, hard-shelled crustacean was making its way across my living room floor and seemed to just materialize. How did it get to the middle of the floor without me noticing it before? Where did it come from and how long has this guy (I later found out it was female) living with me?

It was when I grabbed a paper towel and picked it up that I stopped worrying about how or why it was there and started thinking OH MY GOD, IT'S HAVING BABIES!

I turned it over to find what is pictured below, a line of pill bugs no bigger that the size of a pinhead scurrying out of the pouch on the underside of the bug. I had never seen such a thing.

Pill bugs, I learned after a few hours of research, are harmless, but annoying. They eat organic matter, like dead skin cells, plants, any crumbs or food droppings. They thrive in damp areas, and will likely die inside a home within a day or two if they cannot find damp, dark, or cool places.

They infiltrate homes through cracks, doorways and windows, and are  particularly common in homes that have flowerbeds or gardens along the foundation. They don't carry diseases or sting or bite. They simply exist.

Several websites recommend spraying the interior and exterior of homes with an insecticide to create a barrier against these unwanted guests. I did this within hours of finding that this mama was birthing a litter of what appeared to be around 15-20.

I have yet to find from where they are entering my home, although this week construction is taking care of some saturated and damaged wood inside the walls of my bedroom. I suspect this may be the root of the problem.

And now that you've had your lesson on pill bugs, here is a picture that will surely make you squirm. Now just imagine it was in your home. Have you ever seen this?
