Binghamton University President Harvey Stenger is reported to be one of the people being considered to oversee the 64-campus SUNY system after Jim Malatras steps down as chancellor.

Stenger, who came to Binghamton a decade ago, may be one of the leading candidates to serve as interim chancellor starting in January.

The New York Post reported SUNY trustees are "looking at three well-regarded presidents of flagship colleges" as they consider who should be in charge of the system while a search is conducted for a permanent chancellor.

The newspaper said Stenger, along with Satish Tripathi from SUNY-Buffalo and Havidan Rodriguez at SUNY-Albany, are among those in the running. The report cited "sources close to the deliberations."

Prior to the Post report, Stenger was asked about the possibility that he could be considered for the chancellor's position.

Speaking on WNBF Radio's Binghamton Now program Friday, Stenger said: "It's not on my list of things that I'd like to do." He said "I really enjoy being at a campus. I love the student life aspect of the job."

Stenger added the "chancellor's job is a different kind of job." He noted "it's more of a policy and a government relations type of job." He said "it's not something I would be interested in, even if they asked me."

Stenger indicated he wants to remain at Binghamton University to continue working on projects now underway. He said "I never would want to leave here. We've got too many things that are right at a critical spot." He cited the growing Health Sciences Campus in Johnson City and the addition of new programs.

Stenger could not be reached on Saturday to comment on the report that he's under consideration to become interim chancellor.
