I came across the quandary while watching the Olympics yesterday afternoon. I happened upon a USA field hockey game where the muffle chant "USA, USA" could be heard over the television microphones.

I proceeded to call my friend.

It is one thing to be patriotic, but to arbitrarily start a chant of USA -- one of the most over-used chants in all of sports and one that seems to have only come about by obnoxious college-aged kids -- seemed to more belittle the sport than anything.

Watch Conan occasionally or The Colbert Report and you'll see the hosts lead a chant and then laugh at the audience. They are not laughing with the audience; they are mocking it. Yet, Americans don't seem to get that part of it. The USA chant is tired and has lost all its power, especially when it comes out during obscure sports you know most of the fans in attendance are probably there only because that's the only ticket they could find.

Now, I vented this frustration to my friend, who quickly replied with:

"Well, would you rather sit next to a drunken American chanting or the one guy who knows way too much about field hockey and proceeds to tell you all the nuances and rules throughout the game?"

Essentially, a know-it-all. I paused to think. My answer was still the drunken fools chanting USA even though they know little-to-nothing of the sport.

You know them both well, so the question goes to you:
