It's getting to be that wild time when little ghosts, witches, and characters of all sorts take to the streets in search of the best candy.  I'm talking of course about HalloweenEvery year my husband and I take the kids out in search of sugar-a-plenty and have tried some different locations due to friends inviting us.

The hot spots are: the neighborhood surrounding Greater Plains Elementary School, center city (i.e.: Ford Ave, Walnut St., etc.), the neighborhood surrounding Valleyview Elementary School, and River Street near Riverside Elementary School, including surrounding streets.

Naturally, many families live in those areas surrounding schools and expect to see a lot of kids on Halloween, so they are fully stocked with all the best candy.

If you have little ones who love to dart from house to house without looking out for on-coming traffic, then the safest neighborhood to trick or treat in is Angel Heights area, adjacent to Fortin Park.  It's a very quiet residential area with generous people.  It's a little dark though since there aren't street lamps so if you venture out there, bring some flashlights and glow sticks make the kids stand out.

Here are some popular and very safe non-residential trick or treat options on designated nights close to October 31st (official dates yet to be announced):

  • The Southside Mall
  • SUNY Oneonta
  • Main Street Oneonta (in the afternoon on Halloween)

Don't forget to factor in the Oneonta Halloween parade which always takes place at 7 p.m. and goes down Main Street. That's a fun event my family looks forward to every year.
