Welcome to our new feature! Just about every week or so, we'll highlight a different local hometown as well as fun happenings, businesses, and unique attributes. This week's entry is Otego, NY.

Located in the southwestern portion of Otsego County, settlement began around 1775, and growth stalled due to disagreements between ethnic Germans and New Englanders. The Town of Otego was formed in 1822, but it was called the Town of Huntsville. It was named Otego in 1830. The town of Otego encompasses the Village of Otego, a hamlet called Wells Bridge, Lake Misery, Otsdawa, and other communities.

Small Town, Big Vision

It seems that the Village of Otego is having a moment. It's ideally located on Route 7 and adjacent to I-88. A somewhat typical Upstate New York rural community, in recent years, Otego has seen an influx of interesting businesses to the community, and with it some colorful characters who are experts in their craft. Let's take a look around town and see all it has to offer.

Hey IKEA, Go Ahead and Have a Seat!

Trollbok Farm is described as a "Scandinavian-inspired farm store and eatery in Otego, NY with local produce and crafts". Owned by a Swedish expat, this is the only place in our region that I know of where you can find authentic Scandinavian goods. There's also a bakery within as well as hot food items. Swedish meatballs are a fan favorite and frequently offered.

Born From Nature, and Smelling Amazing

Hudson Made was formed in 2012, and their brick and mortar shop in Otego is a relatively new entry to the town. Specializing in nature based grooming products, items such as soaps, lotions, oils, and bath salts round out the lineup. Half the fun of Hudson Made is the inherent aromatherapy, due to the products being derived from plants and flowers, each one has a pleasing aroma.

You Had Me At Microbrews and Food

Red Barn Farm Brewery & Kountry Kitchen has it going on right now. Their new tasting room just made its debut, and they're offering up Texas style brisket found all over the menu in the form of Philly sandwiches, atop burgers, and in melts. There's also dishes with pulled pork available. Craft beer and BBQ, what a treat!

Small Town, Big Flavor

Another local joint with their sights set on beer and BBQ is The O at 112. If you're into music, The O at 112 is a treat to behold. They frequently have live music on their stage, inside the restaurant, and wherever you can strap on a guitar. Aside from pulled pork and brisket, you can find house made spiedies, ribs and "trash plates" on the menu.
