Memorial Day doesn't have to be spent inside, fretting over the fact nothing seems to be open. Oneonta offers a few options for that weekend.

  • The Greater Oneonta Historical Society is focusing on the true meaning of the holiday -- to remember and celebrate those who served or are serving in the military. This year the History Center sets aside special remembrance for Ethel Scatchard, the only Oneonta woman to die in connection with World War I. Memorial Day is the 90th anniversary of the Neahwa Park monument dedication. According the GOHS release, "Who was she? What did she do? Why is the monument there? At 1:00 p.m. on Memorial Day, GOHS member Robert Calandresa will answer these questions and talk about Ethel's life, her family, and her time. While visitors are walking in and getting seated, Robert will play period music on one of the History Center's Oneonta-made pianos."
  • If that's not your thing, there's the 50th running of the General Clinton Canoe Regatta with $25,000 on the line. It starts at 1 p.m., May 26, in Cooperstown and ends at General Clinton Park in Bainbridge.
