Fogle was allegedly carrying special equipment, disguises, written instructions and a large sum of money.

He was caught by the Russian FSB, a successor to the Soviet KGB. The FSB said Fogle was attempting to recruit a Russian officer who specializes in the Chechnya and Dagestan areas.

According to a report by CBS News, Fogle is the first American diplomat to be accused of spying in nearly 10 years. The U.S. Embassy in Moscow nor the State Deparment has commented publicly on Fogle's case.

Fogle was eventually released to the U.S. Embasy and ordered to leave the country.
