On election day, we saw some unprecedented decisions being made by voters across the United States.  For example, Democratic Representative Tammy Baldwin won the U.S. Senate seat from Wisconsin in Tuesday's election. Baldwin, who defeated former Wisconsin governor and secretary of health and human services Tommy Thompson, becomes the first openly gay senator.

Now get ready for legalized pot.  Colorado and Washington passed referendums legalizing marijuana for recreational use. They will become the first states in the country to legalize the drug. The initiatives would allow marijuana to be cultivated and for special stores to sell up to an ounce to individuals 21 and older.

And lastly, Maine and Maryland became the first states to approve same-sex marriage by popular vote. They will become the seventh and eighth states to allow same-sex couples to marry. The victories break a 32-state streak, dating back to 1988. Prior to last night, gay marriage had been rebuffed by every state that held a vote on it.

Like it or not, get ready because changes are coming.  I think no matter how you feel about these issues, isn't it nice to have confirmation that our votes count and change can occur as long as people take the time to make their voice heard through voting?
