Work has resumed on the $1,500,000 renovation of Oneonta’s Huntington Park following a winter hiatus.  A bulldozer and excavator are clearing trees and grading the hillside scramble as part of Phase 2 of the project.

Several mature trees were taken down last fall. This week the contractor cut the trunks into six foot sections and stacked them on the lower level of the park with the expectation they will be taken to an area sawmill to be cut into lumber.

Construction crews will also be working this season on the planned children’s play zone, the green theater, picnic area and pathways.  The conceptual design for the reimagined Huntington Park was created by the Stimson Landscape Architecture firm. Plans include new gardens, an orchard, an ADA trail system, a labyrinth, and a landscaped hillside for winter sledding.

Last fall workers dug trenches and installed the pipes, cables, wires and concrete bases for new energy efficient LED lighting. The lampposts will duplicate the lights on Oneonta’s Main Street.  The controls and electric box for the lighting will be installed in the library basement.

Most of the money for rebuilding the park is coming from two grants secured by Huntington Memorial Library. The funds are provided by the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation.  All work on the park is expected to be completed in the fall of 2023.
