It's one of those situations where the perfect storm took place at the Susquehanna SPCA (SQSPCA) and that storm included an already full-capacity situation with cats with a triple-digit waiting list for cat surrenders, along with the unexpected arrival of 14 dogs from a sad hoarding case, and couple that with another 10 dogs arriving from the Humane Society of Louisianna tomorrow. It's raining cats and dogs and the shelter really needs help to save these animals!

To fill in some details on these dogs for you...the shelter was involved in rescuing 14 dogs in Otsego County that were not being properly cared for unintentionally. These dogs are mostly large breed working dogs and are a mix of Great Pyrenees, Cane Corso and Newfoundland of varying ages. Most have not been spayed or neutered and are being treated for worms and fleas. Sadly, many of the dogs are emaciated and a couple of them have injuries. The dogs have not been properly socialized but don't appear to be aggressive at all.

On top of that, the SQSPCA had agreed to take on 10 dogs who need homes following the devastation from hurricane Ida recently in Louisianna. According to SQSPCA's Executive Director Stacie Haynes, " Louisiana’s animal shelters and rescues, some of which still do not have working electricity or running water, are trying desperately to rebuild. We had 15 open kennels at the time, so we agreed to take 10 dogs.”

So now what? That's where you animal lovers come in. With all the dogs that now need shelter and care, the shelter is putting out a plea for fosters to take on one of the rescued working dogs since they need space and don't do well in a shelter environment. They are energetic dogs that need to run so a country home is best. If you can adopt or just temporarily care for one of these dogs, please reach out to the shelter at (607) 547-8111, extension 102 or extension 107. Below are two of the dogs currently available to adopt.

Some good news regarding adopting a cat or dog this month: because the shelter qualifies as overcrowded at the moment, they are able to participate in The Staffworks Fund Homeward Bound Program which helps shelters reduce adoption fees. That means the SQSPCA is able to offer 20% off all adoptions of pets at least 6 months or older until the end of the month.

As for the in-coming dogs from the Louisianna shelter, fortunately, some can be transported north for rehoming and Haynes is optimistic the other dogs will find forever homes since she says that there seems to be a shortage of adoptable dogs in Otsego County. The average stay of a dog at SQSPCA lately has been only 19 days which is good news for these southern dogs.
