The Band Celebrate 40th Anniversary of ‘The Last Waltz’ With Expanded Reissue
The Band will release four new 40th anniversary editions of The Last Waltz, including a collector's edition box set featuring the never-before-seen shooting script by director Martin Scorsese.
The set -- available in all formats, except the collector's edition, on Nov. 11 -- showcases the Band's Thanksgiving Day 1976 concert at the Winterland Theatre in San Francisco. Called "The Last Waltz," the show was the final concert to feature the group's original five-man lineup of Rick Danko, Levon Helm, Garth Hudson, Richard Manuel and Robbie Robertson.
They were joined by an all-star cast including Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, Joni Mitchell, Muddy Waters, Dr. John, Van Morrison and Neil Young, among others. All of it was captured by Scorsese, who made a celebrated concert film that was released theatrically in April 1978.
The official 40th anniversary edition will include the original soundtrack on two discs, featuring newly remastered audio from the original master tapes. The 54-track deluxe edition includes four discs and a Blu-ray, expanded to include rehearsals, outtakes and The Last Waltz film. Several performances not featured in that original movie are among the rarities, including Clapton's "All Our Past Times," Mitchell's "Furry Sings the Blues," rehearsals of Morrison's "Caravan" and Dr. John's "Such a Night," as well as the Band's "King Harvest."
There is also a deluxe six-disc vinyl edition, pressed on 180-gram vinyl for the first time and shipped in a lift-top box. The collector's edition is a four-disc, two Blu-ray set that includes a 300-page book featuring the shooting script, rare and previously unseen photos, three foldout storyboards and a special forward written by Scorsese. A complete track listing is below. The collector's edition, which will be limited to just 2,500 copies, is due on Dec. 9.
