There is the possibility of strong to severe thunderstorms in our area through this evening. While Otsego County does not have any watches or warnings posted, this could change as the day goes on.

NOAA Binghamton said: "A severe thunderstorm watch has been issued for portions of Central NY and NE PA, valid now through this evening. Current radar is showing pulse-like storms starting to fire up across the western portions of Central NY. We're expecting continued strong to possibly severe thunderstorm development through this evening, with the primary concerns being strong winds and hail."

It's always a good to be reminded of how to be prepared for such events.

  1. Stay Informed: Monitor weather forecasts and alerts through reliable sources such as the National Weather Service (NWS). Weather radios, mobile apps, and local news channels provide timely updates and warnings.
  2. Develop a Plan: Create a family emergency plan that includes communication strategies and designated safe areas in your home. Identify a central meeting point and ensure all family members are aware of it.
  3. Assemble an Emergency Kit: Prepare a kit with essential items such as water, non-perishable food, flashlights, batteries, a first-aid kit, medications, important documents, and cash. Keep this kit in an accessible location.
  4. Secure Your Home: Trim trees and secure loose outdoor items to prevent damage from strong winds. Consider installing surge protectors to protect electronic devices from power surges caused by lightning.
  5. Safe Shelter: During a storm, seek shelter in a sturdy building. Avoid windows, doors, and electrical appliances. If a tornado warning is issued, move to a basement or an interior room on the lowest floor.
  6. Lightning Safety: Avoid using corded phones and electrical equipment. Stay away from plumbing fixtures, as lightning can travel through plumbing.
  7. After the Storm: Be cautious of downed power lines, flooded areas, and structural damage. Report power outages and any hazards to local authorities.

Preparedness minimizes risks and enhances resilience against severe thunderstorms, ensuring safety and quicker recovery in the aftermath.
