Nearly 13,000 State Drivers Tickets for Seatbelt Violations

New York State’s troopers report ticketing nearly 13,000 drivers during its recent “Buckle Up New York” effort. The enforcement program began in May and ended in the first week of June.

The report says the 12,692 tickets were given to drivers or passengers who were not wearing seatbelts. About 800 tickets were given out for drivers who had children riding with them without proper restraints.

The program comes after a similar enforcement program to ticket those using handheld devices and texting while driving.

Legislators Agree on Act to Protect People with Special Needs

Governor Cuomo and legislative leaders have reached agreement on legislation to protect people with special needs and disabilities.

The legislation creates a new justice center that will transform how the state protects over a million New Yorkers in state operated, certified or licensed programs.

Among other things, the center will have a special prosecutor and inspector general who will investigate reports of abuse and neglect and will prosecute allegations that rise to the level of criminal offenses. The legislation also calls for a 24/7 hot line manned by professionals and a statewide registry of violators.

Legislation Will Amend Child Pornography Law

Legislation has been agreed on that would amend New York’s penal law to prohibit individuals from knowingly accessing, with the intent of viewing, child pornography on the internet.

Under current law an individual who views child pornography on a web site where the images are automatically embedded in a computer is not guilty of possessing child pornography.

If the new legislation is enacted in New York, individuals accessing a website intending to view child pornography will be committing a Class F felony.
