Cody Coleman pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the May 3, 2019 shooting death of Amelia Wakefield of Oxford in his Smithville Flats home.

Coleman and the Oxford High School junior had an on-again-off-again relationship and were reportedly not dating when Coleman shot Wakefield with a 16-gage shotgun.

The then-18-year-old had initially been charged with felony murder, felony criminal use of a firearm and misdemeanor criminal possession of a weapon and was to stand trial in May, 2020.  The COVID-19 pandemic delayed the trial then Coleman reached a plea deal with prosecutors.

Reducing the primary charge from murder to manslaughter reduced the possible maximum sentence of 25 years-to-life to 20 years in prison for Coleman.

Coleman will serve five-years on probation after his release.
