Watch a Bizarre Scott Weiland Performance of Stone Temple Pilots’ ‘Vasoline’
It has not been a good week for Stone Temple Pilots. First, the band – now fronted by Chester Bennington – had to stop a show to deal with a heckler. Then their former singer Scott Weiland offered a bizarre rendition of STP's "Vasoline," which you can see above.
Performing at Brewster Street in Corpus Christi, Texas, on Tuesday with his new band the Wildabouts, Weiland began the song by stating, “All right, this is a new song. We just worked it out today.” Then he appears to sleepwalk through "Vasoline." Incidentally, both "Vasoline" and "Big Empty" – the song that sparked a brutal tirade from STP guitarist Dean DeLeo the other night -- were originally found on the band's 1994 album Purple.
Weiland's rep, in comments to TMZ, blamed his poor performance on a "perfect storm" of fatigue, a couple of pre-show drinks and equipment failure when Weiland's earpiece monitor went out. "We've overnighted him a brand new pair of earbuds," the rep added, "and they will be there for his show in Baton Rouge tonight."
Weiland, who also handled vocals for the new supergroup Art of Anarchy, is on the road promoting hie album with the Wildabouts, Blaster. At the launch of the tour, Weiland was involved in an ugly incident with a fan at a meet-and-greet, something for which the singer later apologized.
Bennington, who also does time in Linkin Park, took over as Stone Temple Pilot's singer in 2013 – but not before both Weiland and the remaining members of STP threatened legal action before settling their differences. After a few more spring dates, Stone Temple Pilots will return for more shows in the fall, beginning in September in Cleveland.
