Scammers Pose as U.S. Justice Investigators
The U.S. Attorney’s office says scammers claiming to be from the Department of Justice are trying to get information from local residents through cell phone calls.
The scammers leave a voice mail with a return number that, if the victim calls, directs them to a menu that sounds legit but ends up sending them to a bogus investigator who tries to harvest their personal information.
Federal officials say the scammers are trying to target the elderly and try to exploit their trust in the Department of Justice and federal government.
Anyone receiving the scam call should report them to the Federal Trade Commission on their website or by calling 877-FTC-HELP. (877-382-4357) Fraud can also be reported to the FBI at www.justice.gov/criminal-fraud/report-fraud.
