Those who failed to meet the December 31st deadline to register for the Star property tax exemption have been given an extension.

The state tax department has announced they have extended the deadline to register for the Star program until early March, when they must tell local tax assessors who qualifies for the tax break. Anyone filing late will have to give the tax department a reasonable justification, but there is no penalty. Homeowners who didn't meet the deadline will receive a final notice early this month.

This is the first time in fifteen years that homeowners have had to register directly with the state and is an attempt to cut down on fraud. Senior citizens who receive the enhanced Star exemption do not have to re-register. The Star hotline number is 518-457-2036 or register online.
