If you're like me, you save up throughout the course of the year your non-disposable chemicals and other items considered too hazardous to just throw out, to properly dispose of them on Otsego County’s annual Household Hazardous Waste Day. It's a responsible thing to do to protect the environment that we all enjoy and it's easy. Last year, the county had to suspend this event due to concerns of spreading the COVID-19 virus but it's coming right up. Typically held in September, there are two days scheduled this month in different locations of the county for the convenience of county residents.

Unadilla is hosting a Hazardous Waste Day on August 20 at the Unadilla Town barn from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. and the next day, August 21, the Cooperstown Meadows Office Complex will host an event from 8:00 am to 1:00 pm. For those attending the Unadilla event, there is no need to make an appointment, you can show up any time during the event. However, for Cooperstown, you are asked to arrive according to the first initial of your last name. If the first initial of your last name begins with A thru H; you would arrive some time between 8:00 am and 9:30 am; I thru Q, 9:30 am to 11:30 am; and R thru Z, arrive between 11:30 am and 1:00 pm.

This is a public service event with many volunteers involved to make it happen.

Unfortunately this year, with the labor shortage, a vendor backed out, related to reusing the latex paint that comes in. What that means is that any paint that comes in will be properly disposed of, but will not be remixed for use. It's a side effect of the pandemic and the country-wide labor shortage.
