Friends of Recovery In Oneonta Has First Narcan Vending Machine

(FOR-DO) is getting ahead of the crowd in New York State when it comes to preventing death from opioid overdoses which happen all too often. The Turning Point on Elm Street in Oneonta is now home to the first ever Naloxone (aka Narcan) vending machine in New York State.

Naloxone is a known life-saver according to the National Coalition Against Prescription Drug Abuse (NCAPDA). Naloxone works by reversing the life-threatening effects of a drug overdose and is harmless to someone who does not have opioids are heroin in their system. Naloxone can be administered via injection or a nasal spray. It's very easy to use on someone you suspect may be experiencing an overdose. It's small enough to keep in the glove box of your car or in a purse, in the case that it may be needed at some point along the way.

Anyone can come and get a Narcan nasal spray kit from the FOR-DO vending machine. It's free and each kit has 2 doses in it.

The big question is, should you be a person with Narcan on hand? NCAPDA answers that question. If you have prescription opioids in your home it's a good idea to have it because someone else in your home could end up taking those medications. Unfortunately, that is a common way that opioids get into the wrong hands.

NCAPDA encourages everyone to carry Naloxone just in case they encounter a suspected overdose case but of course, there are people who should carry life-saving Narcan:

- those who have an opioid addiction, along with their friends and family members.
- anyone who has just been released from a recovery treatment center
- those who are taking high doses of opioids for pain management, including their family and friends.

Stunning Mural Transforms Oneonta, NY Eyesore Into Eye Candy

A building that the City of Oneonta plans to demolish, and one of Oneonta, NY's biggest eyesores, has been getting a major makeover thanks to artist James R. Mcilroy, owner of Wolfhound Studio which is a tattoo and art studio at 269 Main Street, Oneonta. Mcilroy has been creating murals on the side of the former Oneonta Sales building on the corner of Market St. and Chestnut St. Extension - a building formerly used as storage by the Twelve Tribes group in Oneonta. Now, instead of focusing on the ugliness of this horrible structure, the eye is drawn instead to the beauty of Mcilroy's artwork. Talk about a transformation!
