Oneonta Man Convicted of Arson and Murder to be Sentenced Friday
A case involving revenge on a former girlfriend that resulted in a fire that killed former Oneonta fireman John Heller will finally come to rest as the sentencing for Gabriel Truitt, the man convicted in the case place this Friday. According to AllOTSEGO, sentencing will be handed down in-person at the Otsego County Courthouse, now that in-person proceedings are resuming.
Prosecutors say Truitt started a fire at a Walling Avenue apartment building in Oneonta to get back at his former girlfriend. John Heller was in an adjoining apartment and rescued his finance along with four nephews but could not save himself in the blaze.
Back in January following a six-day trial, the jury found Truitt guilty of Arson in the first degree, Murder in the first degree and two counts of Murder in the second degree.
