An Oneonta native baseball player is turning pro and heading down under to play professional baseball. 22-year-old left-handed pitcher Michael Calkins starts the first of September for the Wanneroo Giants, a farm team for the Australian Baseball League’s Perth Heat. Calkins was on the 2012 Oneonta High Class B state championship team, the Oneonta Outlaws, and the University of Tampa Division II national champion team. The biggest hurdle until then is probably the 30 hour plane ride.
