NY Legislature Analyzed for Racial Make-Up

A new analysis looks at the racial make-up of the New York State legislature and the results aren’t too surprising.  It turns out that New York is like much of the nation at large when it comes to the representation of minorities in state legislatures.  Census figures from 2014 show white lawmakers hold 74 percent of the seats in the Senate and Assembly while the state’s population is 56 percent white.  Latinos account for 19 percent of the state population but 8 percent of lawmakers.  Blacks make up just more than 14 percent of the population and the Legislature is just less than 15 percent black.
