The Delaware County Sheriff’s Office recently graduated six new officers professionally trained in equine mounted patrol activities. The mounted patrol, which was re-established in 2012, is made up of a team of officers from various law enforcement agencies throughout Delaware County. During the six-day academy, the officers and their equine mounts were subjected to drill and ceremony, crowd control techniques, and public relations. Additionally, officers were trained to acclimate their horses to sight, sound and smell desensitizing; such as smoke, flares, fireworks, gunfire, lights, sirens as well as various ground obstacles. Officers practiced search and rescue procedures and community policing and dignitary protection while mounted on horseback.
