Man Foiled By Deer; SUV Ends Up In Town of Laurens, NY Pond

If you live in rural Central New York, then you are well aware that a deer can jump out in front of your vehicle at almost any time of the day or night, especially during deer season when deer are on the run from hunters. The following is a prime example of why you should never swerve to avoid a deer that jumps out.

New York State Police Troopers were called out to the scene of a motor vehicle accident in the Town of Laurens last Thursday, just shy of 3:30 pm. There was a report of a vehicle in a pond. That's certainly an unusual event and here's how it happened...

According to Troopers, a 56-year-old man from Hopewell Junction, NY was out driving and swerved to try to avoid hitting a deer that entered the road in front of him. Unfortunately for him, by swerving to avoid the deer, he ended up going off the road into a pond. The good news is that he was not injured.

The New York State Police Underwater Recovery Team was able to help remove his vehicle from the pond but that incident is a firm reminder of what NOT to do when a deer jumps out. State Police recommend that drivers should "stay calm and stay in your lane". If you swerve, it's likely you will lose control of your vehicle and there's more of a chance that you will be injured.

If you do end up hitting a deer, make sure you pull off to the side of the road as soon as possible so you don't get hit by another vehicle from behind and turn on your hazard lights. Call local police if you need assistance.
