NY Free Fishing Day: How to Fish License-Free This Saturday
My son John and I love fishing together. There's just something about standing near the water, waiting for that little tug on the line, and talking about whatever comes to mind that makes it special.
John has loved fishing since he was little. Back then, his boots were tiny and an adult helped him hold the rod. Now his boots are bigger, the rod is his own, and that look on his face when something pulls on the line is exactly the same.
That is why I love a day like this one. Saturday, Sept. 26, is Free Fishing Day in New York State, which means you can fish in freshwater without buying a fishing license.
If you've been wanting to take your kids fishing or get back into it yourself, this is a great excuse.
New York Free Fishing Day Is an Easy Saturday Plan
You don't need a fancy boat or a big plan. Grab a rod and some snacks, then find a spot by a pond, lake, stream, or river and enjoy being outside together.
Fishing has a way of making room for conversation. Sometimes you talk the whole time. Sometimes you just watch the water. Either way, it is time together without all the usual noise and distractions.
For John and me, it is never just about whether we catch something. It is about laughing when things don't go quite as planned and getting excited when they finally do.
No Fishing License Is Needed in New York Saturday
New Yorkers and visitors ages 16 and older normally need a freshwater fishing license. That requirement is waived this Saturday, which is also National Hunting and Fishing Day.
Kids under 16 can fish in New York without a license any day of the year, according to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.
New York Free Fishing Day Is a Good Fit for Beginners
Free Fishing Day is meant for first-timers and anyone who has not cast a line in years, and it is an easy way for families to try something different together.
The DEC has an I FISH NY beginner's guide with helpful information about choosing basic gear, baiting a hook, casting, identifying fish, and getting started. Some libraries and providers around the state also participate in the DEC's Fishing Rod Lending Program, so you may be able to borrow gear before deciding whether to buy your own.

New York Fishing Rules Still Apply
While you don't need a license on Saturday, all other fishing rules remain in place. That includes rules for open seasons, fish size, daily limits, and the water where you are fishing. You can check the current New York freshwater fishing regulations before you go.
The DEC's Places to Fish tool can also help you find a nearby spot, so you can head out Saturday with a plan.
