More than seven years after the murder of Johnson City businessman Shakeel Khan, investigators are still searching for answers and asking the public not to forget about the case.

Khan was shot and killed outside his restaurant, Halal Bites, on Riverside Drive in Johnson City on March 30, 2019. The killing shocked the community at the time, and, years later, the person responsible has still not been arrested.

Investigators Say the Case Remains Active

The Johnson City Police Department recently renewed its call for information, reminding the public that the investigation is ongoing and that tips are still needed.

Police described Khan as a devoted husband, father, and friend whose life was taken far too soon. Investigators are continuing to urge anyone with information, no matter how small it may seem, to come forward.

A $5 Million Reward Is Being Offered for Information

The case has drawn attention far beyond the Southern Tier.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation and the United States Department of State are offering a reward of up to $5 million for information that leads to an arrest or conviction in the case.

That reward is part of the State Department’s Rewards for Justice program, which is typically associated with investigations into terrorism or threats to national security.

Investigators Believe Khan Was Targeted

According to investigators, Khan was known for speaking out against terrorist organizations in the Swat region of Pakistan, where he was originally from.

Federal authorities say his murder led to a joint investigation involving the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of New York and the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force.

The FBI’s Albany Field Office, along with the New York State Police and the Johnson City Police Department, continues working together on the case.
