When it comes to shopping for gifts, I just don't have that magic touch. Meaning, I struggle finding that "perfect" gift for birthdays, anniversaries, and the holidays.

Yes, looking for the perfect gift is probably the sole reason for my dilemma. I tend to overthink what would be the best or most outrageous gift to give to someone.

And given that I wait until the last minute to shop, especially around the holiday season, the pressure is just that much more. I suppose the answer is to not overthink gifts and wait until the day before, but after all these years, what is the fun in that?

Anyway, this article is not about me; it's about another one of my "must know" type questions that I ask on our social media sites. This particular question is about gifts, and it is: "When holiday shopping, do you prefer to buy presents or just give gift cards/cash for Christmas?"

For me I like opening gifts, but I do like gift cards that allow me to buy what I want. And a gift card can take the stress out of trying to find that perfect gift, right?

So, here are some of the responses I received. Do you agree with any of them?

  • Kate G.Presents. Although some people ask for gift cards, it feels very impersonal. I like people to know I put thought into the gifts I've purchased for them.
  • Jackie D.Presents. I like wrapping things and watching them actually open a gift. Gift cards are NOT thoughtful at all.
  • Angellover Z. - I like to buy gifts.
  • Kimberly G. - Presents.
  • Jennifer R. - I like to buy gifts.
  • Anthony F. Jr.Presents.
  • Carol F.I like to buy presents.
  • Michelle V.I prefer presents.

  • Patricia L. - In today's age, gift cards can buy food, pay Doctor co-pays, get clothes, or a treat not usually affordable.
  • Catherine G.I do like giving presents, but grandkids are harder to buy for as they age, & they luckily love gift cards.
  • Heather R.Gift cards. So much easier. Just grab them while grocery shopping. I prefer getting gift cards, too.

Irene J Gift card and money.
Jessica S. - Gifts for the little nieces and nephews, gift cards/cash for the older ones.
Kandie B.Cash for my big kids and presents for my grandbabies.
Mary S. - I love shopping for babies up to 10. Any older person gives them cash because they are so picky. My oldest granddaughter is 18, so I buy for her, and she appreciates everything.
Tammi R.It depends on who you're shopping for!
Brenda K.I am a personal buyer.
Amber R.Immediate family that lives close, gifts. Anyone far away, usually a gift card, because I don't know what they have at home, unless they ask for something specific.
