Whether we realize it or not, the world is a pretty big place. Well, it has to be considering that the Earth has more than 8 billion residents, and that number is growing every day.

Within the 195 nations on Earth, there are over 10,000 cities worldwide. Those cities range from relatively small cities with populations of less than 100,000 people to mega-cities like Tokyo, Japan, and Mexico City, Mexico, with populations that top 20 million.

Those cities are incredibly diverse, and residents' abilities to live comfortably in them vary widely. To figure out which cities in the world are the most affordable for people to live in, the Frontier Centre for Public Policy in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, and Chapman University in California have teamed up to release their annual Demographia study.

That study, aptly named Demographia International Housing Affordability 2024, examines 94 major cities around the world to determine which ones are the most affordable. The United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Australia, China, New Zealand, and Singapore are among the cities the study examines. The study ranks cities based on various metrics, including median income, median home prices, and more.

The list of cities that rank among the most unaffordable isn't all that surprising. Hong Kong, China, Sydney, Australia, Los Angeles, California, Toronto, Ontario, Honolulu, Hawaii, San Francisco, California, and New York City, all rank among the most unaffordable cities in the world.

However, the cities that ranked as the most affordable are the most surprising, as nine of the ten most affordable cities in the world are in the United States, and two of those cities are right here in New York State.

It may be hard to believe, but Rochester, NY (2nd) and Buffalo, NY (6th) are two of the ten most affordable cities in the world. While both cities have been seeing exponential increases in their home values and rental prices, each of the metropolitan areas is still very well situated compared to the rest of the world.
